How to Choose a Medigap Plan

Medigap plans are another term for Medicare supplement insurance.  These plans cover gaps in Medicare coverage.  The gap refers to costs Medicare does not cover.  If a patient does not have a supplement plan in place it can increase out-of-pocket costs.  These policies are usually available to seniors 65 and older. Anyone planning to enroll in Medicare is recommended to sign up for a supplement plan for additional savings. Before you begin the enrollment process for this plan, here are 4 things you should know on how to choose a Medigap plan.

  1. What Medigap plans are available and coverage they offer. These are standardized plans provided by private health insurers.  They are named by letter: A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N. Popular options include Plan F, G, and N.  The purpose of these plans is to make it easier to share healthcare costs. Beneficiaries pay a monthly premium for their policy and each has variations in how they help pay for health services.
  2. Details to look for to help you choose a good supplement plan.  Aspects such as medical history and health status may be reviewed upon enrollment.  As you learn about each policy compare what they cover.  There are online tools to use that offer graphs and other visual aids to help you see differences in policies.  There are policies that cover the same services but their rates are different. If you sign up within six months of enrolling in Medicare your rate could be lower.  This is considered the enrollment period for supplement insurance.  During this time you can receive a policy and not be turned down or charged a higher premium due to your health status.
  3. What Medigap plans do not cover; including drug coverage. Choosing the right plan for your health needs includes knowing what the policy does not cover.  If you are interested in prescription drug coverage this policy does not provide coverage for this service.  However, you can sign up for Part D.  Supplement insurance does not cover long-term care, hearing aids, vision or dental services. Medicare Part A and B or the Medicare Advantage can help cover such costs.  However, Medigap cannot be used with Medicare Advantage (Part C).  The Advantage option does offer drug coverage through different plans available.
  4. Another option to consider if you don’t want supplement insurance coverage. You can decide to purchase Medicare Advantage if you do not want supplement coverage.  You can choose to enroll in Part D with Medicare Advantage to help cover drug costs.  The Advantage plan includes options from private companies providing Medicare-approved health coverage.  You can choose your doctor, hospital and receive coverage for preventative care costs such as vision and dental.  Such plans are offered through PPOs and HMOs.  When you sign up for a plan you will be required to obtain services through the insurance company’s network of providers. If you obtain services out-of-network you will be responsible for costs not the insurance company.

This is good information on how to choose a Medigap plan.
