Medicare Open Enrollment is the time of year that you are able to make changes to your Medicare Advantage Plan also known as part C or your Medicare Drug Plan also known as Part D.

Open enrollment starts October 15th each year and ends December 7th. During this time period you can make changes in your coverage that will go into effect on January 1st. You do not have to go through medical underwriting if you make changes during this time period.

Most changes are made with Medicare Advantage plans. You can change from one Medicare Advantage plan to another without having to go through medical underwriting.

You can also go back to Original Medicare – Part A and Part B without medical underwriting. HOWEVER if you want to have a Medicare Supplement plan you would have to go through medical underwriting.

This is a very important consideration. You would need to be reasonably healthy in order to qualify for a Medicare Supplement plan. Make sure that you discuss this option with a qualified agent well before December 7th so you will know if you qualify.

You can also change your Medicare Drug Plan during this time. If the plan you are currently on does not cover your prescriptions then you may be able to find a plan that does.

If you are coming off a Medicare Advantage plan and returning to Original Medicare then you will also be able to select a drug plan without medical underwriting.
